Amendment 28 of the US Constitution

December 30, 2007

Just thought of a great amendment:

Congress shall make no law.

I’m not sure it would pass though. But it would get rid of riders and maybe provide more spare time for impeachment procedures.

An alternative could be:

Congress shall make no law consisting of more than 1000 words.

Which would probably not help with impeachment, but at least get rid of riders.

Comments:

How about following the New Hampshire model? Congress shall not be paid more than $50,000 per annum, including **all** benefits. Compel legislators to work outside of the legislature, and they'll have much less time to waste.

Another that could fly with the 28th would be, "Congress shall make neither law nor regulation from which itself or its organs are exempt."

A nice one would be to force Congress to submit laws through Twitter. Presto! A 140 character limit on new laws.

Seriously though, I like the one about Congress not being exempt from laws it passes.

I think the collectivist U.S. government is having a hard enough time focusing on the old constitution. It would be better to elect new leaders who could read English and obey the constitution.
