Miami Herald article on Noriega's supporters
July 10, 2007Noriega will be freed by the US authorities on the 9th of September. On that occasion the Miami Herald ran a story on Noriega’s supporters rallied by his possible return to Panama. Which primarily focuses on said ex death squad member Elvia Gayle de Best, who according to her has been Noriega’s favorite pen pal since he ended up in jail.
The article goes on explaining how many poor Panamanian’s want to welcome Noriega back as a hero. Of course there are a small group of vocal former death squad members, who lost their source of income when the US took out Noriega in 1989. As Elvia explains she was forced to sell picked pig’s feet (Souse) on the street. Poor Elvia. I wonder the fate of her victims.
The truth is that the vast majority of Panamanian’s were glad to see Noriega gone. They hated his guts. Yes the trains ran on time during Musolini, but that is no good reason for pawning off your liberties. I think the article does a disservice to the Panamanian’s in that it only brings the voice of one old nut case. Why not ask ordinary Panamanian’s what they think?
