Fantastic collection of pre communist Russian advertising
June 21, 2007Soviet Communist propaganda art is famous and people often talk about the genius of their work.
It’s not very frequent that we at least outside of Russia see example of pre Soviet commercial art, which is why this collection of pre-revolutionary advertising posters are very cool:

This ad, which I’m guessing is for agricultural equipment kind of touches me as the farmers who bought this, where no doubt amongst the first to go when Lenin declared war against the independent farmers.
Real Cuba also has a great collection of Pre Castro ads from Cuba which also shows a pretty different view of pre communist Cuba, than the normal propaganda story that people normally repeat endlessly.
Comments:
Wow. Again, wow. It's always fun to discover a myth about communism that I actually believed. The Sov's didn't create great art, they simply co-opted some of the great artists and likely sent the rest of those great artists to the gulag.
Most of the ads are simply excellent. Some, like the first on the page, exhibit styles that would be ahead of the times circa 1910, while others show very good artistic and graphic qualities. Even the gimmicks are tasteful, with the possible exception of the girl dressed in liquor bottles. ;-)
