Cuba supports corrupt practices in Panama
June 07, 2007While I haven’t been able to find exactly what the US ambassador to Panama William Eaton said, but I can only agree with what Cuba’s international propaganda arm Prensa Latina quotes him as saying:
Eaton was quoted in a local paper as saying, “There is a regrettable culture of impunity for the powerful here in Panama, and also with government officials,” which was considered an intrusion into internal affairs by Supreme Court Chief Justice Graciela Dixon.
Every single Panamanian knows this is the truth. And I’m sorry if Mr. Eaton has ruffled anyones feathers by “meddling in internal affairs”. But that’s good.
The US embassy have been some of the strongest advocates against corruption in Panama, which is something little reported outside Panama.
It’s the US embassy who routinely strip important corrupt government officials (including ex presidents and ministers) of their US visa, thus hitting them where it hurts (no more Miami shopping trips).
The US embassy also has sponsored seminars to local press about how to investigate and deal with corruption. Yes it’s meddling, but so be it.
Cuba on the other hand through their unintentionally funny news organs are up in arms about how bad it is that the US is meddling in these affairs. Of course they would, this story plays up to the typical Latin American Idiot and their Northern intellectual friends. After all the US meddling is far worse than corrupt government officials, closing of tv stations or secret police.
Oh well. At least most Panamanian’s know who are the real corruptos.
Comments:
Vargas's article is brilliant and spot on. I'm pondering on following up on my first bumper sticker creation ("You Can't Beat Your Wife with Nuclear Arms"). The new one would be "WWFD?" As in, "what would Fidel do?"
For those who love Fidel and his masterful leadership, be always guided by his compassionate wisdom. Better still, move to Cuba. He'd like to have you, and you could spend the rest of your life (or his) in workers' splendor.
