April 15, 2007This is a bit belated as I’m still busy in my new home of San Francisco, but I’ve long wanted to comment on this article Prius Outdoes Hummer in Environmental Damage article that everyone (but me) wrote about last month.
The article basically says that if you take the total “dust to dust” energy footprint of a Prius vs a Hummer, the Prius requires 50% more energy. This is based on not just fuel milage, but also manufacturing, transportation, lifetime etc. Read the article for full explanation.
I think the real interesting end product of the analysis is that it’s an effective punch at the black and white world view most environmentalists like to live in. These are the same people who like to present a bunch of populist half truths in the name of the common good.
It shows that it is very dangerous to take this road. I’ve heard many environmentalists say that it is important to make people scared to get them to do something, but unfortunately once you’ve frightened them they get turned off for good, when your story starts falling a part.
Besides this, I think the Prius is still a worthy first step. Every generation of Prius is getting better and it’s success is really pushing forward new developments in most of the large automotive companies. Within 10 years hybrid/electric or whatever vehicles will no doubt be a lot more economical for the consumer. The big hurdle of course is improving battery technology, but work is being done in this department. If we completely discard the Prius because of some loony environmentalists overselling their cause we all loose.
