Is Laban also killing the islamic worlds tourist industry

February 13, 2006

A month ago I was planning a quick little holiday. On my short list were:

  • Egypt’s Red Sea resorts
  • Dubai

I am now glad we didn’t chose to go there as the Danish foreign ministry has in the last two weeks discouraged Danish travel there. As a matter of fact most Danish holiday companies have now cancelled flights to their islamic resorts out of concerns of safety. I am guessing the same is happening elsewhere in Europe.

So what will this do to the economy of the following popular holiday destinations for Europeans:

  • Egypt
  • Dubai
  • Turkey
  • Tunisia
  • Morocco
  • Maldives
  • Malaysia
  • Indonesia

For at least some of them such as Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey tourism is one of the most important industries both from an employment but also foreign currency earner. My gut instinct is that Laban, the Saudi government and their friends have done way more damage to their islamic brethren than they really have done to Denmark.

Yes Arla is hurting I am sure. But I’m sure Sharm al Sheik and Alanya will be hurting more. These are some of the most popular tourist destinations at the moment.

Maybe the real winner in this is the Canary Islands tourist industry, where most of the people destined for Sharm al Sheik etc have been sent instead.

I don't know... tourism can be resilient... perhaps the Bali bombings and, why not, even 9/11 could help us predict the drop in visitors.
