The red rose scandal
January 26, 2005This is definitely one of the funiest stories of the election here in Denmark. The Socialdemocrats like in many countries use the red rose as a symbol.
As long as I can remember it has been a popular move by them to give out red roses at rallies and on the street. In my former life as a young socialdemocrat I myself have done this (Please don’t tell anyone).
So one of the free morning papers published a scandal about a week or so ago, when it was discovered that the various local party associations where buying cheap (oh horror) Kenyan roses made by slave labor for less than a buck a day. After all the Socialdemocrats is the party of the trade unions. That same day the national association issued an order to only buy European high wage roses from now on.
The next day the “scandal” was exposed as the foolishness it always had been by various aid organisations who say that these African roses where actually helping people out of poverty in Kenya. The Socialdemocratic party quickly retreated and said it was now ok to buy “fair trade” roses from Africa.
THe whole thing exposes the stupidity of the trade unions’s selfish support of the anti globalization movement. Which was one of the real reasons I (and most of Latin America) was scared of Kerry in the US election.
