The other great Dane in Panama - Maersk

Panamá opera el Canal con mayor eficiencia
According to several articles in Prensa today Maersk, the giant Danish shipping company, is very happy with Panama and the Canal.
Thats pretty cool. As I'm from Denmark (a very small country) its great to see Denmark out and about.
According to a ranking in the paper, Maersk rates an overwhelming number one worldwide at almost twice the size of the closest competitor Meditarranean Shipping.
In one of the articles they interviewed Niels Dahl Pind the captain of Mette Maersk, one of their Panamax ships. Panamax is the international classification of the largest ships to be able to pass through the Canal.
Niels has sailed the canal for 35 years and claims that the canal is running markedly more professional and efficient now than before the US handover in 1999. I'd say thats a pretty big vote of confidence to the Panamanian people who should be proud.
Last week I was actually on the bridge of one of these ships for the first time out at the port of Balboa (on the Pacific side of the Canal). Absolutely fascinating. I know nothing about shipping, but the efficiency by how everything was run was amazing.
The huge container cranes they have are absolutely amazing as well. The port of Balboa which is owned/operated by Hutchinson/Wampoa out of Hong Kong have pledged to drastically increase the size of this port, which is also good news for Panama as there have been many layoffs recently.
